I'm am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A.) and Appalachian State University (M.A., Ed.S., Ed.D.) I have worked in the field of counseling for 9 years as a school counselor, college counselor, and private practice clinician.  I work with clients using person-centered, cognitive behavior therapy to help them recognize their strengths and abilities to overcome anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and improve relationships. I specialize in working with young adolescents and teenagers as they navigate critical life transitions. My dissertation, which focuses on student transitions to middle school, can be read here.  I also advocate for the role of counselors as mental health professionals in public education and speak on related subjects.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree and Master of Social Work from Walden University and have a passion for helping individuals and families navigate life’s challenges in a supportive and empowering environment. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in community mental health, providing support for concerns related to anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, autism, social anxiety, family stress, and emotional regulation. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and person-centered, meeting clients where they are while helping them build on their strengths and move toward their goals. I draw from evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and strengths-based interventions, while providing affirming care to LGBTQ+ individuals and families. I believe therapy should be a safe space for growth, healing, and self-discovery, and I strive to help clients develop practical tools, increase resilience, and create meaningful, lasting change.

I believe in order to have total healing and complete growth, individuals must focus on treating all parts of themselves as a whole. This holistic approach includes looking within and at all areas of one's life (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc.) I provide consultations and counseling/ psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults and advocates. My main therapeutic approaches are Holistic and Cognitive-Behavioral. However, the therapeutic approach chosen will be client centered and problem focused on the issues experienced by the client to assist the client in reaching the most favorable outcomes, growth and healing. My qualifications include having very detailed experience working with children, parents and advocates for children. I have 28 years of counseling experience working as a School Counselor with culturally diverse, special needs and at risk youth populations within the schools and 4 years of experience as a Licensed Mental Health Clinician within the agency setting. I received my B.A. in Psychology from Hampton University in Hampton, VA and my M.A. in School Counseling from North Carolina Central University in 2004. I am a mother to two adult SONshines.
